Greg was off from work and getting dirty in the garden with some of the other kitchen staff. His phone rang as he staked some cherry tomatoes.

“Hey, Dale. What’s going on?” Greg asked as he stood up and bent backward to stretch out his back.

“Oh, you know. Just trying to get this new restaurant up and running. How’s Heirloom doing?” Dale asked as he got out of his car and walked into Monarch Coffeehouse.

“Oh, it’s going. Business is great. We’re out in the garden—my chef, cooks, and I, and even some servers are helping out. Everyone seems to love it out here. Why don’t you come on out here one day? Pick some produce, and maybe get a little dirty.”

Dale looked at his watch. “Oh, I don’t know … everything is so busy lately.”

Greg scratched his head. “You haven’t said much about the restaurant. Did you find a space?”

Dale paused. “I did. It’s a great place to have a restaurant too. They’ve started construction on it.”

“Oh yeah? Whereabouts?” Greg asked.

Dale, stammered, still unsure about how Greg would feel about his restaurant being so close to his. “Well, um … it’s in Cape May. Great location.”

Greg chuckled. “Yes, I know that, but where in Cape May?”

Dale scratched his head in thought as he stepped into the line to order. “It’s over on the other side of the main hub. You know, outside of the downtown area.”

Greg paused, starting to sense that Dale was avoiding the question. “That’s really vague, Dale. Can you be more specific?”

Dale felt his heart drop as he stood in line for coffee. The customer in front of him paid, and it was his turn. Suddenly, relief fell over him. “Hold on, Greg. I’m about to put in my coffee order. I stopped over at Monarch.”

Greg heard Dale talking to the barista for a few moments.

When Dale got back on the phone, he said, “Hey. Can I call you back? I’m juggling a tray of coffee here for the construction crew.”

Greg nodded. “No problem, but I want to hear all about this restaurant.”

Dale gave a nervous laugh. “You got it.”

Greg hung up the phone just as Liz walked outside with a tray of homemade lemonade.

“I brought you all some cold drinks,” Liz said as she handed out the glasses.

Greg took a long sip and sighed as the sun beat down on him. “Thank you, Liz. This hit the spot. Why don’t you come join us for a little bit. I’m telling you, being out here feels great.”

Liz shook her head. “I don’t think so, Greg. I don’t know if it’s my thing.”

Greg cocked his head. “You were so excited about planting flowers out here. What happened with that? And when Dave and Margaret had the garden, you loved helping out with the farm stand.”

Liz shrugged. “Ruining my expensive shoes in mud and getting completely dirty and attacked by bugs happened.”

Greg chuckled and put his hand on her shoulder. “Come on. Give it another shot. Wear gardening shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
